Our Historic Journey

1964

Senate Resolution for Dental School

The University of Lagos Senate passed a resolution to establish the Dental School, marking the beginning of dental education in Nigeria. Prof J W Taylor, a British Oral Surgeon and Chief Dental Surgeon of Northern Nigeria, was appointed as Head of the new Dental department.

October 1965

Planning and Preparation Phase

Prof Taylor resumed formal duties and had a year to plan for the admission of the first set of students. The new Dental department was housed in a bungalow affectionately called the 'Pako house' by students and staff, featuring wooden partitions to demarcate offices and clinics.

September 1966

Faculty of Dental Sciences Established

The Faculty of Dental Sciences of the University of Lagos was officially established and admitted its first batch of dental students in October 1966. This historic moment marked the birth of the oldest Dental School in Nigeria and West Africa.

1967-1970

Faculty Development and Growth

Additional distinguished faculty members including Prof Johnston (consultant in restorative dentistry), Prof. J.J. Ana, N.E. Henshaw, J.O. Akinosi, and E.S. Akpata were recruited. The first restorative laboratory for student training was established during this period.

June 1971

First Graduation of Dental Surgeons

The Faculty achieved a historic milestone by graduating its first batch of dental surgeons, marking five years of rigorous training and establishing the foundation for dental practice in Nigeria. This graduation represented a pivotal moment in Nigerian healthcare history.

1972-1975

International Recognition and Expansion

The Faculty gained recognition as a center of excellence in dental education, attracting students from other African countries including Ghana and Zimbabwe, as well as from the Caribbean. The department was upgraded into a Division of Dentistry with three specialized departments.
